That metal box, along with the spring and boxing-glove-thingy, are straight out of Spring Man's stage in Megaman 7. I needed a device that could possibly send the Author home, and this caught my eye as I was perusing the sprites over at Heatman's Homepage (now Sprites, Inc.).

One thing that's always kinda bothered me about this comic is that it really doesn't make any sense. Why would the Author need help getting out of the comic? He didn't need any help getting in, right? Then again, I don't worry too much about it, since it was early enough in the comic that I think it can be excused and the punchline is fairly clever.
