The incompetence due to alcoholism seemed like a good way to create friction between Proto Man and George. The problem is that I wasn't really comfortable with the idea that Proto Man would have a problem with his drinking. It's a bit like how I originally intented the "Evil Mega Man" storyline to be Mega Man actually turning evil, but I ultimately didn't like that idea, so I retconned it away as being the Helmeted Author in disguise instead.
