Okay, so I clearly didn't plan all this out. I just came up with an excuse here and went with it. Then, when George ended up further in the past, I realized I could use the opportunity to make the changes to Bass that would allow this scenario to happen. But Bass makes no mention of how or why he was modified to sense those additional frequencies, though it would be easily fanwanked that he wasn't supposed to tell George that it was due to his involvement further in the past, since that could disrupt the space-time continuum. Not that Bass would necessarily understand or care, but it works for me.
