Seriously, what else would an extra-dimensional portal look like? Looking back, I think I should've had George use the word "portally" to describe it.

One of the more irritating things I've dealt with over the years is forgetting how to make special effects that I've made before. For example, over the course of the comic, how many different looks has George's lightning powers had? How many different portal designs have there been? Part of it has been the loss and gain of Photoshop filters that limit or expand the types of special effects I could do. But most of it is simply that, for one reason or another, I neglected to properly save my work so that I could go back and see how I did it before. Which means that many times when I wanted to reuse a special effect, I had to remake it completely, and it ends up looking different, which is annoying.

That being said, here's how to make a reasonable facsimile of the portal in this comic in Photoshop: 1) Make a white circle. 2) Apply a distortion filter to it, like Glass or Ripple. 3) Apply a Twirl filter. 4) Throw in a Lens Flare for good measure. It would also make a bitchin' galaxy.
