The White Space was created for a single purpose: to stop the comic for a bit and allow the Author to talk to the characters again, without it being exactly the same situation that occurred just a few comics earlier. You see, when the Author showed up a few comics ago, I didn't have a reason for him to be there, at least none that I could think of before I sent him away again for no particular reason. Then, of course, I realized a very good reason for him to show up, but I couldn't just have him show up again; that would be stupid. So I had to come up with a completely different way for the Author to interact with his characters, and that way was through the White Space.

As far as the effects for the White Space go, what I did was take the sprites I'd be using, paste them into a blank, temporary image, and increase the brightness in Photo Editor. I would then cut them out and put them into another image that would eventually become the actual comic. Then repeat with a lower setting and there you go. As far as effects in Photo Editor go, this one worked out really well. Of course, it would only work with a white background, which is why the White Space is the color it is.

And, of course, like so many effects I did in Photo Editor, the same thing takes about five seconds in Photoshop.
