I believe this is the first meeting between the Shadowy Author and George. As such, all he knows is that it's a shadowy character. That, along with the powers and his concussion, could lead him to believe that he's talking to his mother. Of course, this interaction has an added level of complexity, because, as evidenced by the Shadowy Author's blue eyes, that's actually the hybrid of George and the Shadowy Author, so to an extent, George is meeting himself here.
