For those of you still wondering why George bothered entering X's mind in the first place, now you know. He did it so that he could get past X's shields to unleash the EMP. And during the assimilation process was the best time to attempt such an intrusion, since X would have had to open the shields long enough to absorb George's mind. I'm pretty sure I had this all planned out ahead of time and wasn't just pulling it out of my ass like normal. Also, I don't know of any "weekends" that last nine friggin' days.
