How to Make a Sprite Comic

It seems to me that the easiest way to show everyone how to make a sprite comic is to give you an example of how I make mine. I'll also add comments from the fancomics forums as I go.

Now, the first thing I do when making a comic is to start in Paint with a 800x200 blank image.

howto1

The next step is to add a framework.

howto2

Now I'd add some type of background colors.

howto3

At some point, you would have to stop and think about what you want the characters to say. To help in this, you might decide to enlarge the image to 800x400. This way you have room to place what each character might say under each panel and decide if it'll work.

howto4

While writing out the script, you've probably gotten an idea for which characters you want to add. In this case, let's say I decided to use Mega Man and Proto Man. Now, I probably don't want to use their original sprites, so I'm going to increase the size of my image again to 800x600 and paste in some sprites from my sprite sheet I might want to use.

howto5

Now, it's totally up to you, but I think those sprites are too small, so I'm going to stretch their height and width by 200%. I use a whole number so they won't become distorted. Since I want Proto Man to be talking to Mega Man, I'm also going to turn him around.

howto6

See why I made that empty portion so big? Now, lets place our characters. I'll put Mega Man on the left side, and Proto Man on the right.

howto7

Okay. Now let's decide who's saying what. Let's have Mega Man be talking in the first and third panels, and Proto Man talking in the second and fourth. All we'll do is copy the mouths off of our original sprites and paste them on the sprites we'll be using in our comic.

howto8

All right, now would be the time to edit those sprites some more if we really wanted. It's not necessary, but let's say we wanted to have Mega Man holding a E-Soda and Proto Man holding a Wily Beer. I won't going into detail about how to do this here, but if you're interested, check out the Spriting Guide.

howto9

Now comes the fun part, text boxes. What we're going to do is move our text down a bit, and put boxes around them. You don't have to use boxes, though; you could use ovals or use nothing at all. But I use boxes. Like so...

howto10

Now, we're going to move those boxes into the area above our sprites' heads. But, you might ask, how do with deal with the transparency problem? If you don't know what I'm talking about, you haven't been working on sprite comics in Paint long enough. Anyway, what I do is take my chosen background color and fill the area under the comic, then move the text boxes.

howto11

Okay, you're almost done. Next, connect the text boxes to the speakers. Everyone has their own favorite method for this, so find one you like.

howto12

And that's about it. There are a couple of other things you might consider doing, like centering the text in the text boxes, but other than that, you're done. That wasn't so hard, was it?
